The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts
More than a cooking school...
Founded in 1977 by Annemarie Colbin, author of the best-selling Food and Healing, The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts has provided education and leadership in the field of health-supportive culinary arts and theory for more than 25 years. People from around the world enroll in our Chef's Training Program to prepare for careers in the rapidly expanding natural foods industry, including health spas, restaurants, bakeries, private homes, catering, teaching, consulting, food writing and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Our Chef's Training Program is offered on both a full-time (four months) and part-time (ten months) basis. The focus of this 619-hour program is mostly vegetarian, with instruction in fish and organic poultry. Our meals are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates and contain no white sugar and minimal amounts of dairy products. Students become proficient in the proper use of kitchen equipment, utensils and procedures, enabling them to master the basic cooking techniques for a wide variety of health supportive foods. Strong emphasis is placed on whole grain baking techniques, the fundamentals of nutrition, and the connection between food and healing.
The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts is licensed by the New York State Department of Education and accredited by ACCET. Our Manhattan location means exposure to the most diverse food culture in the world and being a part of the excitement of a city that's famous for setting food trends and where health-consciousness thrives in a stimulating urban environment.
